67 Blankets for Madiba

5 December 2014 the first anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s death was a fitting day to celebrate his legacy by launching “67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day”. The initiative is championed by Carolyn Steyn (nee Barkhuizen), a former Jeppe girl.
“67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day” aims to join communities in making blankets by hand which are distributed to the poor in winter. The drive has supporters all across South Africa and in Australia, USA, Canada, Cyprus, India, New Zealand, UK and Jordan.
Carolyn is aiming to collect 9000 handmade blankets by April 2015, to beat the Helsinki world record of 7800 blankets. The Jeppe staff and learners have offered their help with enthusiasm and many balls of wool and crochet hooks were handed out today in assembly so that the work can begin over the holidays. Crocheted and knitted blankets are accepted. To find out more, visit the facebook site “67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day (South Africa)”
