Jeppe High School for Girls

Coding with Pelonomi Moiloa

As part of our focus on women in youth month, Pelonomi Moiloa (class of 2010) addressed the school assembly on 7th June About her new passion in life: coding.

After completing her degrees in Biomedics and Electrical Engineering at Wits University, she went on to do a Masters in Biomedical Engineering at Tohuku University in Japan. She really lived the Jeppe motto “Nothing is too difficult for the brave” as on reaching Japan she was told that her lectures would be in Japanese and so she had to learn the language! She is now working as a data scientist for Nedbank, doing something she really loves – using coding to solve problems. She spoke of her journey to this point and the different experiences she has had along the way. She also encouraged the girls to pursue careers in technology and artificial intelligence, previously male dominated professions, which are opening up to women with great success. She spoke to a number of girls at length afterwards, as they had many questions. She will be offering a coding course at the school from Saturday 13th July.20190607_105136
