Last week Thursday, we were honoured to host Ms. Carla De Beer, a digital lawyer, as our guest speaker. She began with a thought-provoking quote by Eric Qualman: "We don't have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it." Ms. De Beer provided invaluable insights on the dangers of social media, sharing real-life cases where individuals faced severe consequences due to poor online behaviour. Emphasis was also placed on the harm that content made in jest as a teenager could have long standing effects on future goals and career plans. She warned learners about the risks of befriending strangers online and emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive digital footprint.Key takeaways included:- Being cautious about online friendships and content- Considering the "Billboard Test" (if you wouldn't put it on a billboard, don't post it online)- Understanding that online content is uncontrollable and can damage one's reputation- Knowing how to report bullying and handle suspicious online requestsMs. De Beer concluded with a quote by Warren Buffet: "It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it." The school’s aim is to create well-rounded, enquiring young women who will be able to think critically and engage constructively with others.

William Shakespeare was born on the 23rd of April

William Shakespeare was born on the 23rd of April 1564. His impact on the English language can not be ignored. He invented 1700 words, many that we still use today; he has written over 36 plays and hundreds of sonnets. This means that Shakespeare is the single biggest influence in English. We are often asked why we still teach Shakespeare in Africa and in 2025. The answer is simple: if we are teaching English as an academic subject, we would be remiss to omit its biggest influence. In addition, Shakespeare, although writing over 400 years ago, was a keen observer and commentor on the human condition.

He dealt with themes of power, ambition, oppression, and dictators in plays such as Macbeth. He tackled prejudice and discrimination in plays such as The Merchant of Venice, and he explores the ideas of being an outsider in a society and the insecurity that that breeds in Othello. These ideas are still relevant. His characters are immortal. Our worlds are not so different. Instead of excluding Shakespeare from curriculum, we believe that we should add authors of other races, cultures, and religions, in addition to the Bard who has transformed our language. Expand, rather than decrease. The more you read; the more you’ll know!

Today, learners were challenged to recite a sonnet by Shakespeare and win a prize. Staff took part in a Kahoot quiz and enjoyed delicious biscuits that complimented them in true Shakespearean style.

Mrs. Bhagwan had the honour of hosting our hockey team, along with their coaches, Ms. Toerien and Mr. Ramlal, at today's headmistress tea. The event celebrated the team's spirit, focusing on "wins and learns" rather than just wins and losses. Mrs. Bhagwan reminded the team that every loss is an opportunity to learn and grow, which was evident in their latest match victory. The older players were also encouraged to mentor and guide their younger teammates, serving as role models and sources of inspiration.

On the last day of school, we launched our Crochet Drive initiative and decided to include the crocheting of scarves, as well as blankets. Today, we were delighted to welcome Dominique Jacquet and Zimole Teffo from the Edenvale Child Welfare as our special guest speakers. They shared the profound impact of our learners' crocheted blankets have had on the lives of children at the centre. Their words served as a reminder of the importance of gratitude and inspired our learners to continue creating these beautiful, life-changing blankets that bring warmth and joy to those who receive them.

Kingsmead Courage Festival is a netball festival that serves as a qualifier for St Andrew’s Tournament in 2026.

Teams must place in the Top 2 to qualify for St Andrews, a prestigious tournament that involves 32 first netball teams from around the country.

Jeppe girls played a total of 9 matches during the 4 days at the Courage Festival, winning 8.
They qualified for the Gold final at St Andrews, and won silver losing to Trinityhouse Randpark in the final.

On March 14th, a group of our learners embarked on

On March 14th, a group of our learners embarked on an unforgettable 11-day journey to France as part of a joint exchange program with Jeppe Boys.

Their adventure began in Oyonnax, France, where they immersed themselves in French culture and explored iconic landmarks such as the Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, and Palace of Versailles in Paris.

The journey continued in Geneva, Switzerland, where they visited the UN headquarters and the Olympic Museum. However, it wasn't all about sightseeing. The girls also enjoyed thrilling activities like skiing, cross-country, and even building igloos.
This cross-cultural exchange program has been a truly enriching experience for both students and teachers, fostering new friendships, cultural understanding, and unforgettable memories.
