Phillip H Moore Music Competition

This is the eighth year of the P H Moore Competition for classical soloists and Jeppe High School for Girls is proud to be associated with a competition of such high calibre. The gala evening of the competition saw outstanding performances by all finalists. The adjudicators for the finals were Waldo Weyer from the University of North West, Prof John Hinch from Tuks and Marian Friedman from Wits

The results were as follows:

Category A: 8-10 years
Winner – Leo Huan from Lynwood Ridge Primary School on Piano (Teacher: Claudine van Breda)
2nd place – Malan Du Plessis from Crawford Preparatory School on Piano (Teacher: Chantie Minaar)

Category B: 11-12 years

Winner Willem Naude from Laerskool Helderkruinon on Cello (Teacher: Karin Scholz)
2nd place – Zandi Viljoen (home schooled) on Piano (Teacher: Claudine van Breda)

Category C: 13-14 years
Winner Cindy Ju from Trinity House on Piano (Teacher: Dr Tessa Rhoodie)
2nd place – Althea Steynberg (home schooled) on Recorder (Teacher: Tiensie-Louise Lategan)

Category D: 15-16 years
Winner – Landi Schaap fromAfrikaans Hoër Meisies Pretoria on Piano (Teacher: Claudine van Breda)
2nd place – Stephen Maycock from St John’s College on Clarinet (Teacher: Allan Thompson)

Category E: 17-18 years
Winner – Andre Breet from Hoërskool Monument on Piano (Teacher: Prof Joseph Stanford and Mrs Hannelie Viljoen)
2nd place – Naledi Dweba from National School of the Arts on Clarinet (Teacher: Jana Barnard)

Category  F: 19-25 years

Winner – Willem De Beer on Piano (Teacher: Prof Joseph Stanford). Willem was born in Bethlehem in the Free State and started playing piano in 2005. In 2009, he won the overall first prize at the Arts Trust National Piano Competition. He was selected to participate in the National Artscape Youth Music Competition and won the prize for the best performance of a concerto. He accompanied his school choir, Menlopark, when they toured internationally in 2010. In 2011, Willem was the youngest competitor to advance to the semi-finals in the UNISA National Piano Competition. He also won the overall first prize at the Atterbury National Piano Competition. He won numerous prizes in 2012 and is currently continuing his studies at the University of Pretoria as a third year student in B Mus.

3rd place – William Earl on Piano (Teacher Dana Cilliers)
4th place – Julien Lume on Piano (Teacher: Dana Cilliers).
