Poetry for Life

The regional competition for Poetry for Life took place over two Sundays during the holidays. Jeppe Girls took part with a number of schools, including St Johns, St Peters, St Davids, St Dominics, Mondeor, St Marys, The German School, Allen Glen and Summit College. Each school had two entrants, each of whom presented both an international poem and a South African poem. The competition was the first of its kind in South Africa, inspired by the success of similar competitions overseas where candidates were encouraged to recite poetry in a meaningful manner.

Kenyesia Martin and Thirasha Waidyaratne represented the school at the regional competition. Both did very well and Keynesia is one of the two winners of the Gauteng competition. She will be joined by the other winner, April Donnely from St Peters, at the national competition in Franschoek in May.
The poems chosen by Keynesia were โ€œUnfinished Prayerโ€ by Nopo Masheane and โ€œPrayer before birthโ€ by Louis Macniece. Good luck Kenynesia!
